Budget air cargo flights prove boon to India's exporters

2007-12-19

EXPORTERS of perishable seafood no longer suffer the delays that threaten their businesses now that low-cost Crescent Airways has introduced cargo flights from Kolkata to Chennai, according to an Express News Service story in Chennai's Newindpress.

Kolkata is looking to export tuna, prawns and other seafood and marine products to the world, said the newspaper, but until recently, reefer cargo had to go by road to Chennai from where shipped to Japan, the USA and the EU and existing airfreight rates were too expensive, said the report.

But with the arrival of the new low-cost carrier, prices between these two centres have come within the reach of local shippers, and a capacity 500 to 600 tons per year is enough to accommodate immediate needs.

Crescent Airways CEO Murali Ram said his company operates a Fokker F-50 freighter with a payload of seven tons and would need two more Fokker F-50 aircraft by March 2008 to meet the demand.
