Delayed e-freight project damages Sri Lanka airfreight

2007-12-17

SRI Lanka's forwarders are angry because of the lack of government action in implementing the promised era of a paperless cargo clearing system, reports the UK's Aircargo News.

eServices Lanka, a partly state-owned company, was charged with implementing the system five years ago and have it running within a year, but the project folded and little or nothing was produced.

Vinesh Athukorala, eServices chief executive, said delays have been caused because not all agencies that need to be connected to the system were ready to introduce it.

Said Niral Kadawatharatchie, chairman of the Freight Forwarders Association: "The current service provider will never achieve the objectives, so I urge the private sector lobby government to throw away the current service provider or get a new service provider to compete with them."
