Mubadala move to enhance emirate's aviation status

2007-11-6

Dubai: Yesterday's announcement that Mubadala will enter the regional aircraft maintenance market is one of the many anticipated for the state-owned firm tasked with making Abu Dhabi a regional aviation powerhouse.

Ever since it purchased a 35 per cent stake in Piaggio Aero Industries, an Italian aircraft maker, in the first half of 2006, Abu Dhabi's investment arm has steadily amassed interests throughout the global aviation supply chain.

Later in 2006 it bought a 40 per cent stake in Swiss aircraft maintenance firm SR Technics, and this year it announced strategic alliances with aviation majors Boeing and Lockheed Martin to collaborate on unspecified future projects.

Yesterday it strengthened its maintenance operations by announcing it has taken over Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Co. from the Abu Dhabi government.
