EU lifts ban on Pakistan International Airlines

2007-11-29

Brussels: The European Union yesterday completely lifted a ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from flying in the 27-nation bloc after the airline addressed the EU's safety concerns.

The European Commission said it had removed PIA and Blue Wing Airlines of Surinam from the bloc's blacklist of banned carriers.

"This latest revision [of the list] shows that when airlines take rapid and sound corrective action to comply with safety standards, they can be withdrawn from the list quickly," Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot said.

The Commission had previously lifted its ban on some of PIA's aircraft.

In March the EU executive banned most of the airline's fleet, citing concerns about maintenance and the age of some aircraft, especially its Boeing 747s.
