Interview with Tulsidas Khimji Pvt. Ltd

2008-1-24

Tulsidas Khimji Pvt. Ltd., (TKPL) was founded in Mumbai, India, in 1895 by Mr. Late Tulsidas Khimji. The company provides a full range of solutions for sea and air cargo including both inbound and outbound services. It was appointed as a Cargo Agent by IATA as early as 1949 and later approved as the Custom House Agent for Santacruz Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ). In 2005, TKPL received ISO 9001:2000 certification. Today the company has a nation-wide presence with offices in 14 locations in India and the ability to handle shipments at a further 16 locations.

During my interview with directors Mr. Hemant Bhatia and Mr. Shantu K. Bhatia, assistant manager Mr. Bhaskar Acharya and Manager Mr.Ravi R. Karekar, of Global Network, we discussed how to promote business opportunities between Chinese and Indian forwarders. There are some very common obstacles caused due to communication. The first is the age gap. Most of the Chinese forwarders who are involved with the oversea business are very young, most of them less than 35, due to the requirements of English ability (older people grew up with less English training). This is in contrast to companies like TKPL, whose experienced managers are older than 35, or even 45. The second is culture. Most of the people from Eastern Asia have very different ways of communicating, which sometimes causes misunderstanding between the two parties. Surprisingly, TKPL asked me if it would be helpful to hire a bilingual person who can handle business communication between China and India. My answer was absolutely YES. This reminded me that Chinese freight forwarders lack the awareness to cultivate a diversified team to assist with global expansion; even some of the big players have not adopted this concept. Companies from India have better understanding on this issue and it is what I strongly recommend that Chinese companies do, to catch up with their Indian counterparts.

These gentlemen also asked questions about how the JCtrans network can help them to improve their marketing ability, and how Global Credit Pass membership can be used as a powerful tool to increase their chances of obtaining new business from around the world. I am looking forward to working with TKPL-a company with over 100-year history. For companies who are interested in business with TKPL in Mumbai India, please contact Ms. Crystal Zheng at JCtrans for detailed information on their company.
