Cargo ship loaded with logs sinks in Davao Oriental
POSTED: 3:33 p.m. EDT, November 27,2006

A cargo ship loaded with logs sank off Baculin Bay, Sitio Bugnot, Barangay Baculin in Baganga, Davao Oriental Wednesday dawn.

Baganga police chief Chief Insp. Angel Sumagaysay said M/V Mike cargo ship owned and operated by Maticia Shipping Corporation loaded with logs owned by Baganga Plywood Corporation had just left Baculin Bay bound for Zamboanga when it sank.

The ship skippered by Capt. Rodolfo Alonzo, was transporting the logs from the Lambajon plant of the plywood company. The logs will be delivered to its other plywood plant in Zamboanga.

Sumagaysay said the ship was totally submerged together with the logs, 500 meters away from the shore.

All the 20 crew members of the ship were able to sneak away from the sunken ship using a rubber boat.

Investigators are still looking into the incident.
