The Australian dollar closed higher at new high of 83.23 U.S. cents Friday compared with Thursday's close of 82.57.

During the day, it traded between a low of 82.92 U.S. cents and a high of 83.35, its highest level since October 10, 1990, when it reached 83.45 US cents.

The currency ended at 98.78 yen from Thursday's close of 98.50 yen and was at 61.59 euro cents from 61.31 euro cents.
