Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST), a subsidiary of Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), has started the next phase of expansion to be completed early next year, according to Shipping Gazette.
"Today's ceremony signifies the extraordinary progress of BEST since its official opening in 2012," said HPH European chief Clemence Cheng.
"The productivity levels it has achieved in such a short period of time gave us optimism about its future potential. Despite some initial teething issues," he said.
Said Port of Barcelona president Sixte Cambra: "This semi-automated terminal is the most advanced and productive in southern Europe and instrumental in projecting the Catalan economy to international markets."
BEST managing director Guillermo Belcastro said the terminal has one of the most modern entry/exit gate complexes in Europe and one of the largest rail terminals with an eight-track railway facility with mixed gauge (Iberian and UIC), connecting the port to Spain and southern Europe.
