The Alabama State Port Authority's Board of Directors, in a 10:00 a.m. (CDT) meeting today, authorized the director and chief executive officer, James K. Lyons, to acquire two industrial tracts adjacent to the Port Authority's Choctaw Point Complex at the Port of Mobile.
"Both of these properties are strategic to the Port Authority's long range growth by providing expansion opportunities for the port's intermodal investments," said Lyons. The Alabama State Port Authority's Choctaw Complex includes APM Terminals Mobile, the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility and the Intermodal Logistics Park. The 35.28+- acre tract to be acquired is located on the seaport's federal shipping channel adjacent north of APM Terminals Mobile, and would provide expansion opportunities for the Port Authority's rapidly growing container terminal. A separate 63+- acre tract is located along Interstate 10 and is adjacent to the Port Authority's Intermodal Logistics Park. This tract provides additional lands for investments that would utilize the container and intermodal rail facilities at Choctaw Point. Currently, there are approximately 95 acres at the Intermodal Logistics Park available for warehousing, distribution and light manufacturing applications.
The Alabama State Port Authority owns and operates the State of Alabama's public, deep-water port facilities at the Port of Mobile handling over 25 million tons of cargo annually, supporting over 127,500 jobs, and generating $18.7 billion in economic value. The Authority's Choctaw Point Complex has immediate access to two interstate systems and five Class 1 railroads.
