AS the fourth largest port worldwide in terms of raw tonnage, Tianjin port's annual cargo volume is expected to hit 600 million tonnes in 2017 with 23 dry ports built, reports Xinhua.
At present, Tianjin has built 23 dry ports in hinterland including the ones in Hebei province's Shijiazhuang city, Inner Mongolia's Baotou city, Ningxia's Yinchuan and Shaanxi's Xian, covering 10 provinces, cities and autonomous regions totalling five million square kilometres. As a major transport gateway for foreign trade in northern China, Tianjin port has played an important role in driving the economy development of the hinterland. It is said nearly 70 per cent of the port's total cargo volume and more than 50 per cent of its import and export value come from the hinterland regions outside Tianjin.
Tianjin port is the largest comprehensive port in northern China and an artificial deep-water port with the highest level. Its cargo throughput last year surpassed 500 million tonnes, ranking fourth in the world and container throughput hit 13 million TEU, ranking 11th worldwide.
