Terex Port Solutions (TPS) launches its first mobile harbour crane, the Terex®Quaymate M50, designed as an entry model for small maritime and river ports aiming to professionalize their cargo handling. With an efficient diesel-electric drive, this purpose-built crane model, with 50 t maximum lifting capacity, 36 mradius, and 50 m/min hoisting speed, provides operators of smaller ports with an economical as well as user and environmentally friendly machine. It is designed for lighttomedium-duty application, cost-effective working speeds and a life cycle appropriate to the application. The crane is also suitable for limited investment budgets, and helps operators with continuous-shift loading and unloading of virtually all types of cargo on inland barges and coasters.
Developed by an international team of engineers, produced in China
With the Quaymate M50 crane, customers benefit from international engineering expertise and the quality promise of the Terex® and Terex®Gottwald brands. According to the principle of Functionality driven by German engineering, Terex engineers from Western Europe, China and India adapted the proven Terex Gottwaldharbour crane design and technology to develop a new cargo handling crane designed to replace conventional telescopic, crawler and stationary cranes, excavators and other cargo handling equipment that is often found in small terminals and is not built to cope with the harsh conditions often found in ports. The crane uses components from both Asia and Europe and is manufactured in the TPS plant in Xiamen, PR China.
Robust, cost-effective and easy-to-operate, based on proven models
The Terex Quaymate M50 mobile harbour crane is compact in design, provides a robust and service-friendly construction and – terminal structure permitting – can be operated in the terminal with power supplied via the harbour mains, without generating any exhaust emissions. The Quaymate M50 unit’s design is based on the Terex GottwaldModel 2 crane and features many benefits compared to non-port equipment. As a genuine mobile harbour crane, the Quaymate M50 is classified for a sufficient number of load cycles and can be easily maneuvered for positioning on the ship. It has a powerful electrical main drive, its high-positioned cab provides a good view of the job site and the stairway through the inside of the tower protects the operator from the weather when accessing the tower cab. Finally, the high boom pivot point and horizontal load path help create the conditions for fast and collision-free work on the side of the ship and with cargo on deck.
Quaymate M50model also available with option packages and as a portal harbour crane
As with all other cranes from TPS, options and option packages that enhance versatility, level of equipment and therefore productivity, are also available for the Quaymate M50 unit. The crane can be supplied with a cable reel and electric hook rotator for operation with automatic spreaders for container handling, or with motor grabs for bulk and scrap handling. For quays with infrastructures that require rail-mounted solutions with an individual portal, TPS will offer the new crane as a portal harbour crane under the designation Quaymate P50(P for portal).
Demand for first cranes and supplementary equipment
It is precisely in light of these characteristics that Dr. Mathias Dobner, Vice President & Deputy Managing Director of Terex Port Solutions, is convinced that the Quaymate M50 crane will write a lasting success story: “Throughout the world new terminals are appearing and existing terminals are continuing to develop. This means that many operators are looking for their first harbourcranes or harbourcranes to replace non-port equipment, while others would like to add to their existing fleet.” Such a market phase, in which many terminals in Asia now find themselves, presents a particular challenge for TPS, as it differs considerably from the demand situation in established ports: “In many regions of the world, we are dealing with economies that are at the start of a growth period. These markets demand functional solutions with cost-effective and rugged machines which firstly work reliably and secondly allow the terminal in question to grow,” Dobner continues.
History repeating itself:TPS again helps terminals to professionalize
The Terex Quaymate M50 mobile harbour crane is the TPS solution for a growing group of customers that can benefit from an efficient, reliable and simple to operate harbour crane without the high investment costs of larger cranes. According to Dobner, history is also repeating itself: “When we launched the mobile harbour crane around 60 years ago, we were responding to changing requirements in many terminals. At that time, we developed a machine that was initially based on our conventional mobile cranes.” Since then, mobile harbour cranes have developed from small universal machines to large purpose-built cranes that today form the backbone of many ports throughout the world. Thanks to its efficient and innovative drive, the Quaymate M50 crane is designed to help replacenon-port equipment that is not designed to cope with the harsh conditions found in ports or rated for continuous-shift cargo handling on ships: “With the Quaymate M50 crane, we are again helping many operators to professionalize their cargo handling. Furthermore, we are making it perfectly clear that we can build small entry-level products as well as large, heavy-duty cranes for developed ports.”
Expanding into markets throughout Asia
With the new Terex Quaymate M50 crane, TPS has reinforced its strategic aim to develop products on a customer-driven basis – a principle that is also geographically defined, as Dobner explains: “There was a good reason that engineers from Asia were significantly involved in the development of our new crane and that the crane is manufactured in our Chinese plant. For it is here that there is currently the greatest demand for such a crane.” Owing to current developments around the globe, according to Dobner it must be assumed that the Quaymate M50 crane will also enter other markets. He also emphasizes that the Quaymate M50 unit can be supplemented with other TPS products: “In existing as well as in new markets, we wish to grow with our customers.
As a provider of complete port solutions, we can offer a portfolio with elements that complement each other. They can be combined to form complete solutions to help customers respond to changing local situations.”
