Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is to improve the traffic situation at Hamburg's largest container terminal, Burchardkai (CTB), through a series of measures. For this purpose, it has brought forward a number of construction projects which had been envisaged for the medium term. CTB is thus also preparing for further growth in the volume of trucks handled.
Dr. Stefan Behn, who is responsible for the Container segment on the Executive Board of HHLA, says of this decision to bring forward the planned construction measures: "Trucks are a key mode of transport at Container Terminal Burchardkai and throughout the Port of Hamburg and will remain so in future. In the past weeks we have once again seen that the container terminal as a whole can only operate at full capacity with optimal truck handling conditions. To optimise the terminal, we have now brought forward a series of measures which we had planned for the medium term. Through these measures we will also prepare Burchardkai for further growth in the volume of trucks handled."
Jens Hansen, managing director of the Container Terminal Burchardkai, adds: "Once this construction work has been completed, it will considerably reduce the frequency of tailbacks affecting the public road network. This will help all those concerned, particularly forwarders and truckers. By doing so, we make a contribution to ease the difficult traffic situation at the port."
The key measure relates to the truck parking area at the CTB. In future, 81 parking spaces will be available for trucks here instead of the current 50. The terminal exit road is to be moved to free up space for this additional parking. Moreover, self-service terminals will be installed at the southern end of the parking area to reduce walking distances for drivers. The current terminal exit road will be used as a fourth entry lane and fitted with an OCR portal (OCR = optical character recognition). This will remove the need for manual data input, shortening the registration process for drivers.
