UAE's Gulftainer expands 50pc to record 6 million TEU

UAE's Gulftainer port operator expanded operations 50 per cent year on year supported by growth at Recife, Brazil, lifting a record six million TEU across all terminals during 2013, according to Shipping Gazette.
Sharjah-based Gulftainer also hopes to develop facilities at Lebanon's Port of Tripoli to handle vessels by year-end.
Its acquisition in Saudi Arabia of Gulf Stevedoring Contracting Company (GSCCO) has contributed to a 34 per cent growth at its Jubail Container Terminal, boosting imports 10 per cent, according to UAE's Arabian Supply Chain.
Its UAE prospects of Khor Fakkan Container Terminal (KCT) showed cargo decline due to international sections against Iran slowing but still maintained an average of 6.5 per cent annual growth over the last five years.
Its container berths in Umm Qasr, Iraq is forecast to boost prospects due to the opening of the newly built 750,000-square-metre Umm Qasr Logistics Centre.
The company's record year reinforces its position, said a statement, supporting its goal of handling 18 million TEU and operating 35 terminals across five continents by 2020.
