Israel's ZIM (USA) is offering a bill of lading to shippers at Richmond, Virginia, for loading on 64 Express barges owned by the James River Barge Line with thrice weekly round-trip service to and from Norfolk, according to Shipping Gazette.
"Zim is using the Port of Virginia to provide service to the furniture and finished product manufacturers from Asia and the regional refrigerated freight market and paper mills needs in export to both Atlantic and Pacific trades," said Zim North America president Lea Bogatch-Genossar.
Shippers delivering cargo to or from Zim at the Port of Richmond will have access to the 180 ports served by the ocean carrier, reports American Shipper.
"This decision by Zim adds to the increasing significance of the barge service that connects the Port of Virginia and the Port of Richmond," said Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart.
The 64 Express container-on-barge sailings provides Norfolk International Terminals, APM Terminals Virginia (Portsmouth) and the Port of Richmond.
The port estimates the barge service accounts for about 12,000 fewer truck trips on I-64 on annual average.
