The third major port in Tamil Nadu at Ennore has been renamed Kamarajar Port. The decision, which came a few days ago in the form of Union Cabinet approval, was formalised with Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan, unveiling a plaque at a function organised by the port management in the city, reported The Hindu. With this Tamil Nadu has an airport, in Chennai, and a seaport named after the legendary Congress leader and former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The port, the third such facility – the others are in Chennai and Tuticorin – in the public sector in the state, was inaugurated in 2001. The port in Tuticorin was renamed in February 2011 as V O Chidambaranar Port. Vasan said the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre was carrying forward various schemes conceived by Kamaraj. The port, hitherto known as Ennore Port, is in the forefront of such facilities in the country and has the potential to become the first in terms of cargo handling. |
