In December the first vessel laden with concrete products from Latvia docked at Södertälje. The shipment came from Latvian company UPB which recently teamed up with the Port of Södertälje.
As Stockholm continues to grow this has also meant the creation of new business opportunities for both Swedish and foreign companies. At present there are numerous large sites under construction in the region and for Latvian company UPB, manufacturing pre-cast concrete products for the Swedish market, the close proximity to the capital was an important factor in their choice of port.
- We chose to do business with Port of Södertälje due to its geographical location. Here the port has both the suitable cranes able to handle concrete products as well as large storage areas, says Ingus Siksna, logistics manager at UPB.
The vessels that have so far docked at port have been loaded with nearly 2 000 tons of concrete walls, floors, beams and stairs. It is a logistical challenge to place the goods in precisely the right position on the storage area so the 60-odd trucks that are needed for further transport can smoothly load up the construction parts with the minimum of fuss.
- Logistics are important to us and we choose our cooperation partners with care. Port of Södertälje has shown a professional attitude and willing to take on new challenges, says Ingus, who has previous experience of collaboration with other Swedish ports.
Latvian UPB has been an actor on the Swedish market for a number of years. The company was founded in 1992 and today employs a workforce of 1 200. Forty percent of production is exported but with the current rate of expansion in the Stockholm region, this figure is bound to increase.
- Our volumes continue to rise annually and because environmental issues are important for us we shall be focusing on using the seaway for our transports to Sweden, concludes Ingus, logistics manager at UPB.
