The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) that runs the Port of Baltimore, has won the Presidential "E Star" Award for excellence in export service at a ceremony at the US Department of Commerce in Washington.
"I want to congratulate the Maryland Port Administration for receiving this tremendous honour," said Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, after the award was presented by Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker.
"Rising to the challenge of the National Export Initiative, exports through the Port of Baltimore's public marine terminals have jumped nearly 23 per cent in the past four years," said Gov O'Malley.
Exports of general cargo, considered to be containers, autos, ro-ro, farm and construction machinery as well as forest products, from Baltimore's public marine terminals increased 22.6 per cent.
In addition, the total export cargo tonnage from the public terminals is 52.2 per cent higher than when the MPA won the "E" Award in 2007, reported the American Journal of Transportation of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Since that time, exports have increased from 36.5 per cent to 38.3 per cent of total Baltimore throughput. This marks the third time that the MPA has received the award, having won it in 1964 and in 2007, according to Shipping Gazette.
