Container lines' schedule reliability improves

Global schedule reliability increased for the first time since November as the global performance improved by 4.2 percentage points to 72.3 percent in March, according to SeaIntel.
Data from INTTRA shows that global container delivery increased for the first time since August, from 47.3 percent in February to 54.8 percent in March.
As Maersk Line improved its global performance from February to March by five percentage points to 83.6 percent, Maersk Line returned to the top spot in March as the most reliable carrier.
The Danish carrier was followed by Hamburg Svd and UASC, which achieved a global schedule reliability of 81.1 percent and 75.9 percent, respectively.
Despite that global schedule reliability has increased and the performance improved by seven, eight and 13 percentage points from February to March on Transpacific EB, Asia-North Europe and Asia-Mediterranean, respectively, SeaIntel's report shows that the drop in schedule reliability over the past months continues to be visible in many trade lanes, as the performance is significantly below the level recorded a year ago. For example, transatlantic WB, WCSA to Asia and Asia to North Europe are 21, 24 and 27 percentage points below the March-2013 level, respectively.
COO and partner in SeaIntel, Alan Murphy, said: "Even though we are now seeing an improvement in the carriers' performance, it will take some months of continued improved performance before shippers will experience a performance level similar to the one they experienced a year ago. It is doubtful whether the carriers will be able to reach the same level as last year, as the majority of the carriers are or will be reshuffling their services on the major east-west trade lanes and in some of the north-south trade lanes too.
"So far, we have seen a significant number of service changes this year, and these changes cannot avoid impacting the carriers' schedule reliability as vessels need to be phased in and out of services."
Finally, some trades show very good results on container delivery, such as the South America to Mediterranean, Africa to Asia and North America to Oceania trade lanes, which reached a record-high 57.9 percent, 69.7 percent and 82.6 percent timeliness on container delivery, respectively.
