Danang Port in central Vietnam handled more than 1.3 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of this year, up 37.6 percent from a year earlier, despite the economic downturn.
The figure included 47,000 TEUs of container commodities, reported Vietnam News Brief Service.
In an effort to encourage local shipping firms to shift freight transport from road to sea, four domestic sea transport routes between Danang, Sai Gon and Haiphong ports have been opened.
The Danang port targets to handle 5.5 million tonnes of cargo by the end of the year but the port is facing an overload of container ships, with the port's container handling wharves kept very busy, general director Nguyen Thu said.
Danang aims to build a regional centre for logistics connecting multiple transport routes to distribute transit goods to the north, the south, and the central highlands of Vietnam, the southern region of Laos, and the northeastern region of Thailand.
