Eimskip, operating from in Iceland in the North Atlantic, has negotiated another reduction in the purchase price of two 875-TEU ships ordered from Shenfei yards, Rongcheng of Shandong province in 2011 following earlier delays, according to the Shipping Gazette.
According to the first amendment agreement with the shipyard from April 2013, the first vessel was scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2014. The new amendment agreement with the shipyard expects delivery of the first ship in the second quarter of 2014.
In addition to the delay, Eimskip has negotiated a further reduction of the first vessel's purchase price of US$750,000. Before this, Eimskip had negotiated a reduction of the total purchase price for both of the vessels by $10 million, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The delivery of the second ship has also been delayed, with delivery now expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
Each vessel is equipped with plugs for 230 reefer boxes and has deadweight tonnage of 12,000 and is 140.7 metres long and 23.2 metres wide.
The delivery delays will extend chartering of two vessels. The new ships are expected to replace two chartered vessels currently operated by the company.
Said Eimskip president and CEO Gylfi Sigfusson: "The negotiation of a reduced purchase price can be considered as the shipyard's compensation since Eimskip has to charter vessels longer than expected. Significant excess capacity of container vessels worldwide has resulted in vessel owners in general delaying delivery of new vessel buildings. This has resulted in delay of vessel delivery."
