INDIA'S government is considering a proposal to construct four container terminals and one multi-purpose terminal through public private partnerships (PPP) at the nation's top five box ports.
The projects under review include new container terminals at the ports of Ennore, Kandla, Kolkata and a multipurpose facility at Mumbai. The terminals would be developed through a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis.
The construction of a fourth container terminal has been proposed at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the country's largest box hub that handled 4.9 million TEU between January and November 2013, according to port authority statistics, reports Lloyd's List.
A statement from the Indian government said: "These projects will now be recommended for grant of final approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Shipping will submit a cabinet note to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for the purpose."
It added: "These projects are proposed to be awarded in the current financial year by various major ports for implementation under public private partnership mode. The proposed projects are to create an additional capacity of 150 million tonnes per annum."
So far in 2013, the Indian Ministry of Shipping has approved 16 projects against a target of 30. Port projects already awarded include six under PPP, while all 16 will add 90 million tonnes of annual capacity to India's port system.
The nation's top five container ports handled 8.3 million TEU in 2012, an increase of 5.4 per cent over the previous year.
