Three mainline container vessels will be calling at New Mangalore Port during December.
P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said that the mainline container vessel of Pacific International Lines-m.v. Kota Halus-from East Africa called at New Mangalore Port.
This is the fifth mainline vessel that called at the port during the current financial year. The vessel commenced unloading 175 containers of raw cashewnuts to various cashew-processing units situated in and around Mangalore. The vessel, which will sail back to East Africa via Dubai, will load export containers.
"From with one vessel during 2007-08, now it is the 36th mainline vessel calling at the port," he said. Seamaster Shipping Logistics of Seaways Group was the agent of the vessel.
He said that other mainline vessels such as m.v. Kota Nalus and m.v. Kota Haram would call at New Mangalore Port on December 10 and 23, respectively. These two vessels will be sailing back with export containers to East Africa, via Singapore.
The advantage of mainline vessels directly calling at the port is the reduced transit time. The voyage from East Africa to Mangalore will be only 9-10 days whereas vessels via Colombo will take 28 days, he said.
The port handled 33,422 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers till November 30 of 2013-14 as against 31,272 TEUs during the corresponding period of previous year.
Tamilvanan said that the port handled 28,150 tonnes of timber in a vessel in November. The vessel, m.v. Stadt Solingen, is the largest parcel size of timber ever handled at the port in a vessel, he said.
