International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI) arranged for a brand new mobile harbor crane to be delivered to the port of Tacloban to join the cargo handling equipment fleet brought in by the company over a week ago.
The crane, manufactured by Gottwald of Germany, will provide a key role in the loading and offloading of relief aid containers and project cargo of up to 100 tonnes. It is one of two that have been delivered to Hijo International Port, an ICTSI subsidiary in Davao del Norte.
With the crane, ICTSI has deployed equipment worth over US$5 million to Tacloban. The mobile crane was delivered on board the vessel, Gloria, from Hamburg shipping firm, SAL-Heavylift, carrying an all-Filipino crew. SAL provided the passage from Davao to Tacloban free of charge.
Stinis of Holland also donated two spreaders that would be used by the crane.
Despite the difficulty and risk of transporting the crane from Davao to Tacloban because of shallow draft along the route and the state of the port itself, engineers from ICTSI, Gottwald and SAL worked around the clock to find solutions to give Gloria safe passage to Tacloban.
