The decision had been taken to close the port at 9pm yesterday evening due to strong winds exceeding 50 knots (57mph) which put customer and staff safety at risk.
"The Port authority said that it was now working with ferry operators « to ensure that services are running with minimum disruption and that customers get on their way before the port closes for Christmas."
Ferry services between Newhaven and Dieppe also resumed on Tuesday morning having been suspended yesterday due to strong winds.
However, the weather continues to affect ferry routes between Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man.
Meanwhile, there is widespread disruption to rail services in the UK, flooding on some roads and delays at airports.
