THE Port of Los Angeles has announced that in November 2013 combined loaded imports and exports rose by 20.2 per cent, from 433,617 TEU last November, to a total of 521,422 TEU.
Factoring in empties, which were up by 8.7 per cent year-on-year, overall volumes in November increased by 17.3 per cent to 683,849 TEU.
A statement from port authorities said the increase in container throughput is due in part to larger vessels calling at the port, as well as improvement in the US economy.
A breakdown of the results shows that imports grew by 18.7 per cent compared to the same month a year ago, to 342,247 TEU this November. Exports soared by 23.3 per cent to 179,175 TEU.
In the first 11 months of the year, total container volumes fell by 3.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2012 to 7,215,223 TEU.
