We're always working to identify new technologies and seek out alternative energy sources that can help us achieve our ambitious CO2 reduction targets.
At present we're aiming to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% per TEU by 2020 and contribute to better local air quality conditions.
Here are just a few places where we're putting these initiatives into action:
We have a selection of automated and electrified yard equipment at Maasvlakte II in the Port of Rotterdam which will improve efficiency while limiting our CO2 emissions.
We're planning on implementing shore side electric power at Pier 400 in Los Angeles. This will eliminate air emissions associated with the use of auxiliary engines from vessels and shift the emission burden to power generation facilities in the local grid. The assumption is that electric generation facilities have more diversified energy sources and better emission controls.
We've implemented eco rail-mounted gantry cranes at APM Terminals Algeciras in Spain. These have a diesel engine energy hybrid management system to increase efficiency and reduce diesel fuel consumption by as much as 40%.
