CHINA REPORT: Westbound rates 'almost stable'

2012-8-2

Several leading container shipping lines plan to defy the currently gloomy outlook for China-Europe westbound trade growth and implement peak season surcharges later this week.

Hapag-Lloyd and MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), for example, both recently announced their intention to introduce a surcharge of US$350 per TEU in the Far East-Europe westbound trade, including container movements out of China, effective 1 August.

The former, which has often been a trend-setter this year when it comes to Far East-Europe trade rate rises, also simultaneously published its intention to bring in a further general rate increase, of $250 per TEU, from 15 August, the line's fifth such GRI since the beginning of March.

However, while those announced GRIs total around $2,300, forwarders and other ocean freight logistics providers active in the China trade told Lloyd's Loading List.com that as of mid-July, actual market rates of around $1,800 per TEU were widely available. "Typical rates westbound from, say, Xiamen to the UK are maybe $1,750 per TEU and US$3,500 for an FEU," claims one.
