Khalifa does the business

2012-11-20

Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) gave details of what it called a "strategic redirection"of traffic from Mina Zayed, the historical city centre cargo hub of Abu Dhabi, to the new port, some 60km east.

Cargo equivalent to 700,000 20ft containers has been handled at Khalifa Port since operations commenced on 1 September.

The move of container traffic to Khalifa Port is two months ahead of schedule and will be completed in January 2013, said ADT CEO Martijn Van de Linde.

"International shipping lines are making use of the deepsea berths at Khalifa Port to send larger container vessels to Abu Dhabi than we have ever seen before,"he said.

The new port can handle 2.5 million teu a year.
