Rena owner says protecting coast a priority

The stranded container ship that has been leaking oil into the Bay of Plenty is not showing any signs of deteriorating, the vessel's owner says.

The Liberian-flagged Rena ran into the Astrolabe Reef, off Tauranga, on Wednesday with a significant amount of water flowing into two cargo holds.

It has been leaking fuel oil into the ocean, but the flow appeared to have ceased on Saturday.

Hundreds of people as well as equipment from Australia and around New Zealand are involved in the clean-up and salvage.

Several birds have died and others are being treated after being soaked in oil.

A maritime response spokesman says it's too early to estimate the total clean-up and salvage bill, but whatever resources are needed are being used, with the cost likely to be borne by the vessel's owner.

"The general approach is that the spiller pays," he said.
