India transporting iron ore in containers

2008-8-9

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), the country's largest sea carrier, has turned around its loss-making liner business by exporting iron ore in containers, the Business Standard reports.

SCI's liner business made a net loss of US$113,600 in the June quarter, against a loss of $1.1 million in the corresponding period in 2007.

Bulk carriers have been in short supply in the past few years, leading to high freight rates. Container rates, however, have remained steadier by comparison.

SCI has deployed two of its five container ships for export of iron ore to China.
