Murmansk port sees July's cargo rise 3pc

Murmansk Commercial Seaport in Russia handled 1,115,267 tonnes of cargo in July, an increase of 3 per cent over the same month a year earlier.

In July, the port handled 15,988 cars, including 12,290 coal cars, and 40 vessels.

Export volumes for July 2008 amounted to 1,072,901 tonnes, up 3.2 per cent year on year. This total includes 892,700 tonnes of coal, 154,700 tonnes of apatite, and 11,300 tonnes of non-ferrous metals.

General cargo totalled 58,900 tonnes, up 4.5 per cent compared to July 2007, and bulk saw an increase of 2.7 per cent in July at 1,056,400 tonnes, said the www.dars.ru Russian Transport Daily Report.

It added that during the first seven months of the year, the port handled 8,126,557 tonnes of cargo, 119,292 cars and 298 vessels.
