Bangladesh's main Port of Chittagong handled nearly 15 per cent more containers during the first five months of 2008 compared with the same period a year ago, amounting to 435,157 TEU.
This compares to 378,632 TEU for January to May in 2007, reports Reuters citing figures from port authorities.
It said that volume growth was being boosted through the deployment of more efficient port equipment including gantry cranes and fork lifts.
"Container handling will rise by 40 per cent over the next two years (from the level of 2007)," said Mohammad Faruk, chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority at the recent commissioning of six new fork lifts.
