The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has launched a study to explore the ways it can maintain rising cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
The strategic business assessment, aimed at keeping the port the leading US East Coast port, began this month and will be completed by 2009.
Issues to be examined will include land use such as terminal capacity and future cargo growth.
The PANYNJ believes their forward looking projections are one of the reasons cargo volumes have been reaching such high levels.
The previous study commissioned by the PANYNJ showed that they would not exceed five million TEUs until 2015, a figure the port surpassed in 2006.
The PANYNJ has already acquired 119 acres for redevelopment of new cargo container space.
