Asia-Europe trade grows steadily, Asia-US keeps dropping

Member lines participating in the Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC) saw their peak leg box volumes grow by 9.3 per cent in May on the Asia-Europe trade compared to the same month a year ago to hit 0.85 million TEU.

Over the first five months of the year FEFC carriers' Asia-Europe container volumes increased 10.4 per cent year on year.

On the transpacific trade, PIERS has reported that in April peak leg Asia-US volumes suffered a decline for the seventh month in a row, shrinking by 7.9 per cent against the same month a year earlier at 1.08 million TEU.

Over the first four months of 2008, Asian exports to the US have fallen by 6.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2007 to total 4.24 million TEU.
