Alitalia's cargo assets finds buyers

2008-7-19

Two buyers have shown interesting in jointly acquiring near-bankrupt Italian carrier Alitalia's cargo assets, Reuters reports.

Alitalia's cargo unit employs a dedicated fleet of five MD-11 special freighters, as well as the holds of its passenger planes and partnerships with other airlines.

The carrier transports cargo from Malpensa airport to China, India, Japan, Korea, the Americas and Africa.

Private equity firm Equinox and holding company Miro Radici Finance, which has airport and cargo interests, are assessing the possibility of creating a new company to absorb Alitalia's cargo activities.

The new company would be based at Milan's Malpensa airport. The airport suffered a decline in business since Alitalia began cutting flights.
