Italy's Port of Trieste emerges as Asia-Europe transit hub

2008-6-29

Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia Region held a port promotion conference on June 18 in Shanghai to introduce a full-set of services of Trieste port in the field of container multi-modal transportation.

The Port of Trieste, with a hinterland of 100 million people northeast of the Alps, is the most convenient gateway to the heart of Europe, Riccardo Riccardi, an official with the Italian transport ministry told the conference.

Trieste is fast becoming one of the international shipping hubs because of political and economic changes in Middle and Eastern Europe, also influenced by the booming Far East economies, said Mr Riccardi.

Sailings from Port Said to Trieste are 2,200 sea miles, or three and a half days, shorter, than they would be if the destination were Hamburg, and cost US$180,000 per vessel one way and $360,000 return, he said.

Savings could be upwards of $500,000 per return voyage from Port Said to Trieste considering fuel costs, adding that savings would amount to $26 million annually for 52-voyage service, Mr. Riccardi said.

It is the right time to promote this logistics hub in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of Italy as transport costs keep surging and northern European ports approach saturation, he said.

Trieste, with draught of 18 metres, is the only Italian ports, other than Genoa, that can accommodate the latest container vessels. Container volume between Shanghai and Trieste has been growing at a fast pace, he said.
