A Containership has sank in Philippine waters close to the Maralison islet off mainland Culasi as typhoon Frank's heavy rains and strong winds lashed the Binirayan province of Antique.

Peter Rosete, manager of the Manila-based shipping firm in Iloilo City, said they have lost contact with the Oceanic Container Line ship commanded by Captain Carlos Kho, who last contacted his office in Iloilo City at 12 noon on Saturday, reported Philippines Sun Star.

Mr Rosete said the vessel was sailing from Manila on its way to Iloilo City when hit by big waves, prompting the ship's captain and his 20 crew to abandon ship.

Local fishermen in Culasi managed to rescue 19 of the crew and the skipper of the stricken box ship, however, the vessel's cook Leo Geguro was lost, the report said.
