2008-6-24

The first ship carrying bio-diesel (9,000 tonnes) is ready to leave the port here for the Netherlands in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Mr Chalasani Bhaskar, Chief Executive Officer of Naturol Bio-energy Ltd.

He said here on Monday that the integrated bio-diesel plant at Vakalapudi had been set up at a cost of Rs 140 crore with a capacity of 300 tonnes a day and 10,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical grade refined glycerine a year confirming to the best international standards.

High standards

He said a modern laboratory had been set up here to ensure that the products measured up to the most stringent standards. The plant was importing crude palm oil to manufacture bio-diesel and value-added by-products.

Mr Bhaskar said the policy guidelines had not been laid down for the cultivation of jatropha and other plants required for bio-diesel manufacture or for marketing the product in the domestic market, and therefore the product had to be exported to Europe.

Subsidy needed

"We also need cleaner environs here and the Government should come out with policy guidelines for the manufacture and marketing of the product. It should be subsidised," he demanded.
