One more vessel was added to the Hellenic registry during April of 2008, according to the National Statistics Agency, bringing the total number of ships flying the country's flag to 2,061. These vessel represent a total capacity of 38,473,995 tons, versus 38,364,352 in March. A decline of four vessels was noted in the dry bulk fleet, which stood at 626 in April . In terms of capacity the bulkers registered during April provided a total of 14,811,252. The number of tankers now is 512 with a capacity of 21,994,650 tons, against 509 tankers of 21,838,203 tons. As for the rest of the fleet (passenger ships and other types), they were increased by two at 923 vessels with a total capacity of 1,726,637 tons, while the figures for the month before were 921 ships of 1,714,897 tons. Accumulatively, from January 2001 until March of 2008, the number of vessels flying the Hellenic flag has been increased by 4.8%, with the most impressive rise noted in the capacity of the ships, which now stands at 40.8% (versus 40.4% in March of 2008). Similarly, the number of tankers has been increased by 12.1%, while their capacity by a staggering 56% (54.9% in March). On the dry side, vessel numbers show a marginal increase of 0.2%, while from a capacity point of view, the rise is 24.1% (24.6% in March). The Hellenic flagged fleet ranks third internationally and first in the EU in terms of dwt. Moreover, the the Greek-owned fleet under EU flags accounts for 44.1% of the EU dwt tonnage. Greek owners control 21.7% of the world tanker fleet (crude/oil product tankers) and 20.4% of the world bulk carrier fleet in terms of dwt (excluding ships currently on order).
