Greece's Piraeus Port Authority has selected China's Cosco Pacific as the provisional winner of the tender for the concession to manage two of its three container wharfs.
Negotiations on the agreement would begin once Cosco submitted further documentation.
The Greek port, earlier this month, said Cosco's offer totalled US$6.64 billion - of which 79 percent is guaranteed, plus investments totaling $957.9 million for the 35-year concession.
However, the $6.64 billion figure announced by the port authority differed from the $769.46 million Cosco said it had offered and the company's shares were suspended from trading on June 10. They resumed trade on June 11 only after Cosco gave a clarification on its bid.
Cosco Pacific has also bid to manage container handling operations in Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest port. The other bidders for the same tender include Hutchison Whampoa and DP World.
The process for selecting the winning bidder for the Thessaloniki port concession tender will be completed in July.
