Grand Alliance deploys extra ship to maintain ecospeed on EU1

2008-6-13

Grand Alliance container shipping lines have introduced a ninth vessel of 6,200 TEU on its Japan/North Europe Service (EU1).

The vessel addition is said to complete an environmentally-friendly programme, aimed at lowering polluting emissions, which has been implemented on the Grand Alliance's North Europe-Far East services.

By adding an extra ship, these services are able to operate at an "ecospeed," which is expected to reduce emissions by 20-30 per cent. The four GA partner lines are said to have made "substantial investments" for the additional ships to be phased into their Europe-Asia loops, a Hamburg Sud statement issued on behalf of members said.

"Grand Alliance lines hope that our customers will welcome these measures to significantly reduce emissions and further increase service quality."

It said the port coverage of the EU1 service remains unchanged. Higher schedule contingencies have been allocated to compensate for delays in congested ports, in a bid to improve schedule reliability without harming the environment, the release added.
