2008-5-9

Dubai Ports World (DP World) has commenced construction of the US$300 million Muelle Sur Container Terminal in the Peruvian port of El Callao.

The terminal will be designed with an annual handling capacity of 1.2 million TEU, up from 600,000 currently, a report by MercoPress, an independent news agency based in Uruguay said.

The new terminal is expected to be opened in 2010, according to comments made by DP World president Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem in a statement.

The report said that the new box terminal will be equipped with two berths capable of servicing vessels of 5,500 TEU and a storage area for 800,000 TEU.

El Callao is currently the biggest port in Peru, handling 70 per cent of the nation's cargo traffic.

The report added that DP World, in association with Peruvian company Uniport, was awarded a concession to operate the terminal for 30 years.
