Anti-Iraq War May Day shutdown ILWU ports illegal, say employers

2008-5-5

The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) called the recent May Day International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) strike against the war illegal, but said it would not pursue disciplinary action, reports American Shipper.

US West Coast ports of Oakland, Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle and Tacoma were effected by the walk-out, but terminals were able to find longshore casual labour for the day. Ports that could not, shut down operations.

The ILWU, representing 25,000 workers at 29 west coast ports staged the "walk-out" in spite of an April 24 ruling by Coast Arbitrator John Kagel that such a move would violate the union's contract with the PMA.
