LA port unveils zero-emission heavy-duty electric truck

2008-5-31

The Port of Los Angesles have unveiled a new heavy-duty electric truck that has zero CO2 emissions and can shuttle containers within marine terminals and, more important, between the harbour and nearby warehouses and intermodal rail yards.

Balqon Corp of Santa Ana, California, manufactured the vehicle, but is use is limited as it can carry a loaded container only 30 miles before its batteries need to be recharged.

The electric trucks are suitable for only short hauls. The port has identified some two million annual truck trips that begin and end within 10 miles of the harbour. Those trips are to local warehouses and to the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility, which is less than five miles from the harbour and handles about 700,000 container lifts per year.
