Top carriers control increasing share of world container shipping

2008-5-22

According to a report by French shipping market research firm AXS-Alphaliner, the world's top 10 ocean carriers have grasped more than 60 per cent of the global container shipping market. The world container shipping business is growing increasingly concentrated on the hands of top carriers, Logistics Week reported.

AXS-Alphaliner's report said, during the seven years from 2000 to 2007, the annual container transport volume of these carriers have tripled to 7.08 million TEU. By the end of January this year, these carriers' market share had grown to 60.6 per cent, up from 49.3 per cent in 2000.

Meanwhile, from 51st to the last in the top 100 carriers, their aggregate container transport volume rose only 19 per cent and their market share had dropped from 7.7 per cent to 4.1 per cent.

The report said the increasing concentration was because large carriers keep expanding their capacity while small carriers which mainly focus on regional lines, and are financially weaker, didn't.

In addition, larger carriers' acquisition of small carriers also lead to bigger market share of the large ones.
