Maersk earnings double due to oil price

2008-5-17

Danish oil and shipping group A.P. Moller - Maersk net profit more than doubled to US$1.08 billion in the first quarter of 2008.

The performance of Maersk's oil and gas activities improved considerably, thanks to a 67 percent year-on-year rise in oil prices.

The performance of the tankers, offshore and other shipping activities however deteriorated.

Turnover in Dutch-based port operator APM Terminals International, which for the first time was not included in the container shipping activities, surged 27 percent.

The net result from the group's container operations was a $47 million loss, despite a $141 million gain from the sale of ships. One-off costs related to the implementation of the Streamline strategy totalled $58 million.
