The Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) will expand its container terminal by building four new berths with construction beginning in the next few months.
PTP will add to its existing 10 berths by building the four new ones. The project is expected to be completed by 2010 and will cost approximately RM400 million (US$126.5 million), which will include the construction of yard space and machine installation.
The new berths will add an extra 1.44 kilometres to its current 3.6 kilometres of wharf.
"The additional berths will help us achieve 12 million TEU handling capacity by 2011," said PTP chairman Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.
This year the port is on target to handle 6.5 million TEU exceeding its 2007 total of 5.5 million TEU.
Mr Osman said that after the Integrated Management System award ceremony also said the port was in the process of developing its free trade zone and had attracted RM3 billion worth of foreign direct investment.
