Hutchison, Cosco bid to operate Greek Port of Piraeus

2008-5-15

Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa and the mainland's Cosco Pacific have submitted bids to operate Greece's main container terminal.

Merchant Marine Minister George Voulgarakis said the two firms are vying for management of container operations at the Port of Piraeus, near Athens.

The Greek government is also looking to privatise container operations at Thessaloniki in northern Greece, reported The Associated Press.

Both proposals have drawn the wrath of the country's dockers unions, which have staged protests to try to get the government to back down.
