Emirates Shipping Line quits Zim deal to serve US trade lanes

2008-5-11

Emirates Shipping Line has confirmed that it is ending its participation in the joint Asia Gulf Express (AGX) which it operates with Israeli carrier Zim to US ports.

Launched in June 2006, the AGX offered direct links from the Far East to the US ports of Mobile, Alabama and Tampa, Florida.

The last sailing on the AGX involving Emirates Shipping was undertaken by the St Cergue which called at US ports at the end of March, reports American Shipper.

The weekly AGX service used ten 2,900-TEU containerships, including one provided by the Dubai based shipping line. The port rotation for the joint AGX was Shanghai, Busan, Osaka, Yokohama, Cristobal, Kingston, Mobile, Houston, Kingston, returning to Shanghai.

This development comes as Emirates Shipping Line scrapped its India North America Express (IDX) service earlier this year, in which the carrier partnered with Zim, Shipping Corp. of India (SCI), OOCL and Evergreen Line.

However, Emirates has not ruled out returning to the US trades once the economic situation improves.
