New terminal to double Subic Bay capacity

2008-4-7

With the addition of Container Terminal 2, which comes on stream on Wednesday, Subic Bay's cargo handling capacity will double to 600,000 containers a year.

The US$215 million container facility, funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, is expected to boost Philippines port Subic's bid to become a major transhipment hub in Asia.

The new container terminal can accommodate big cargo vessels, including Panamax and post-Panamax vessels.

For several decades, Subic port used to accommodate US battle ships and aircraft carriers. But today as a freeport zone Subic it has become an international maritime hub.
